Madden 2003

  • System: PlayStation 2
  • Company: Electronic Arts
  • Price: $49.99
  • Rating: E

Touchdown! Madden 2003 is awesome. It's everything the other Madden games are and more. It has the simple Exhibition games for fun and Mini-Camp mode so you can practice your moves to take on your friends. You can even use Franchise mode to take the Buccaneers or any of the other 31 teams from preseason to the Super Bowl. You can create your own team, your own player and even your own playbook.

Al Michaels and John Madden give you the play-by-play, with updates from Melissa Stark. Madden 2003 also has a great soundtrack with everyone from Andrew W.K. and Bon Jovi to Nappy Roots, Audiovent and Good Charlotte.

There are new offensive moves for your running back. There are also new catches and interceptions for Ronde Baber and Keenan McCardell. In this edition of Madden, you can even challenge a call. You can play online with your friends using a special modem (sold separately).

The only thing I wish they hadn't changed from Madden 2002 was the cool player introductions. But each Madden game has a unique introduction to every game. Madden 2003 shows off its outstanding cinematics and graphics, which are sometimes so realistic that people mistake them for a real game.

Overall I think Madden 2003 is the best football game out today, and it is the best Madden game so far. I can only dream of what the creators will come up with next.

NFL Blitz 2003

  • System: PlayStation 2
  • Company: Midway
  • Price: $49.99
  • Rating: E

The new NFL Blitz 2003 is okay. Though it's a lot of fun to play with friends, it is a pretty lame game if you're playing by yourself.

In Blitz 2003, you play an 8-on-8 style. You also use the updated uniforms, stadiums, rosters and even the new team, the Houston Texans.

The rules are the same -- there are no rules! It doesn't even have running plays. So if you enjoy a game because it's similar to the NFL games you watch every weekend, this isn't the game for you. The players don't look very realistic, and if the look throws you off, the fact that after every play your quarterback gets close-lined or power-bombed should.

One of the upsides is that NFL Blitz now has Create-a-Player mode in which you can put yourself on the field with the football players turned WWF superstars. Blitz also has new plays designed by NFL players such as Michael Strahan from the New York Giants, the Philadelphia Eagles' Troy Vincent, Ahman Green from the Green Bay Packers and John Lynch of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The music is supplied by Quarshi, known for it hit single, Stick 'Um Up.

NFL Blitz 2003 needs improvements in the next version to make it a good football video game.
