Seminole protected its undefeated record Monday with a one-point victory over East Lake. Dunedin was close behind with 166.
"I was really surprised that we ended up coming out with the win," said Seminole coach Steve Hoff. "That 164 total doesn't usually beat north county teams. We got away with one today."
The course at Seminole Lake is very tight and gave many of the golfers problems. Seminole's Brittany Lincicome turned in the low score with 37. East Lake's Joe Paolini was the only other golfer to break 40, shooting 38.
East Lake, 17-2 with only one conference loss, is a contender for the conference championship. In a non-conference match last week against Clearwater Central Catholic, Countryside and Palm Harbor. The Eagles won by one point, 156, over CCC and Countryside, which tied for second at 157. East Lake's Paolini and Mike Novotny put up 36 and 39.
Although Countryside didn't win, the Cougars remain undefeated (6-0) in conference play. Matt Isel leads a team of mostly seniors with a 36.3 average.
Midway through the season, Countryside, East Lake and Seminole seem to be the teams to beat.
"There isn't a team in this conference that's not beatable," Countryside coach Greg Bryant said. "It's going to be tight this year."
THIS WEEK: The girls teams will play their first 18-hole event of the season at the Pinellas County Championship on Thursday at Seminole Lake Country Club. If previous all-county matches are any indication, Northside Christian, Indian Rocks Christian, East Lake and Palm Harbor will fight for the top spot. About fifty girls are expected to compete. East Lake's Brittany Jones has had a consistent year with a 38.5 average. Northside Christian's Danielle Jackson and Sophie Dembrowski lead the Mustangs with 39 averages.
