Defending champs beat Blues 4-2

DETROIT -- Nicklas Lidstrom, Brendan Shanahan and Henrik Zetterberg each had a goal and an assist as the Red Wings beat the Blues 4-2 Tuesday night.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings scored three times in the first period.

The Blues closed the gap to 3-2 with 4:43 left when Cory Stilton put in a pass from behind the net. But Zetterberg scored an empty-net goal with 4.4 seconds left.

FLYERS 5, RANGERS 3: John LeClair, Jeremy Roenick and Kim Johnsson each had a goal and an assist to lead host Philadelphia. Keith Primeau and Eric Weinrich also scored for the Flyers. Jamie Lundmark, Rem Murray and Tom Poti had third-period goals for the Rangers.

PREDATORS 2, BLACKHAWKS 0: Scottie Upshall had a goal and an assist to lead host Nashville. Upshall made his case for a roster spot with the Predators, scoring on the power play at 11:17 of the first period. He also assisted on Vladimir Orszagh's goal at 4:56 of the second period -- also a power-play goal. Nashville's Scott Hartnell did not play due to a groin strain.

ISLANDERS 5, DEVILS 2: Alexei Yashin and Brad Isbister scored 28 seconds apart in the second period for host New York in a matinee exhibition, "Cool School Field Trip," in which all 16,234 tickets were handed out to Long Island children in grades 3-8. New York defenseman Adrian Aucoin scored twice, and Jamie Langenbrunner had two goals for the Devils.

WILD 4, MIGHTY DUCKS 1: Cliff Ronning and Filip Kuba each scored two goals to lead host Minnesota. Ronning scored once shorthanded and once on the power play, his first goals in a Wild uniform. Manny Fernandez allowed a goal for the first time in his three preseason games, but made 24 saves for Minnesota.

BRUINS 7, PENGUINS 2: Ivan Huml scored three goals to lead visiting Boston. Huml scored once in the first period, then completed his hat trick with two goals in the third. Jozef Stumpel assisted on all of Huml's goals. The Bruins scored seven consecutive goals against Jean-Sebastien Aubin.

COYOTES 4, CANUCKS 1: Daniel Briere scored twice and added an assist to lead host Phoenix. Daymond Langkow and Branko Radivojevic also scored for Phoenix. Tony Amonte added two assists for Phoenix and goalie Sean Burke stopped 22 shots.

FORMER CANADIENS OWNER DIES: Hartland de Montarville Molson, former head of the family brewing dynasty and longtime owner of the Montreal Canadiens, has died at 95. A statement issued Monday by Molson Inc. announced the death but did not give a date. He was president of the Canadiens from 1957 to 1968. Molson also was a Canadian senator for 38 years.

AVALANCHE-FLAMES TRADE: Colorado traded forwards Chris Drury and Stephane Yelle to the Flames for defenseman Derek Morris and forwards Dean McAmmond and Jeff Shantz.

PANTHERS-SENATORS TRADE: Ottawa traded goalie Jani Hurme to the Panthers for center Greg Watson and goalie Billy Thompson.

KINGS: Ken Belanger and Ryan Flinn have been sidelined with disc problems in their lower backs.

RANGERS: Veteran winger Dixon Ward was signed.
