Taste named best sectionBy Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published October 2, 2002 The St. Petersburg Times took top honors Saturday in the Best Food Section competition of the Association of Food Journalists. For the first time, Taste was named best section in the United States among newspapers with 200,000 to 400,000 circulation. The Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale was second and the Portland Oregonian was third. AFJ honored food journalism in newspapers and magazines at its annual conference, this year in Vancouver, British Columbia. Judges were journalists and other food professionals from around the country. The judges cited the section's "interesting graphics, excellent writing style and diverse story mix." The staff of Taste includes food editor Janet K. Keeler, food critic Chris Sherman, designer Nikki Life and photo editor Patty Yablonski. Lifestyles editor Gretchen Letterman oversees Taste. The Chicago Tribune was named best food section for papers with more than 400,000 circulation. The second place winner was the Minneapolis Star Tribune followed by the Los Angeles Times. In the under-200,000 category, the Hartford Courant was named best section. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat of California and Cincinnati Enquirer were second and third. Other Florida winners include Stephen Smith of the Miami Herald, who won second in food feature writing for papers with more than 400,000 circulation, and Bonnie Boots, who won first place for restaurant criticism for papers with less than 200,000 circulation for work she did at the Weekly Planet. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
