In the newsCompiled from Times wires© St. Petersburg Times published October 4, 2002 ROME -- Producer and director Bruce Paltrow, the patriarch of a show business family that includes Oscar-winning daughter Gwyneth Paltrow, has died in Italy. He was 58. Mr. Paltrow, who had been battling throat cancer, was traveling with his daughter. He died from complications of pneumonia and a recurrence of cancer, according to his daughter's publicist. Mr. Paltrow, whose wife was actor Blythe Danner, began in the film business three decades ago. He started as a writer in the early 1970s, adding producer and director to his job titles, with work on highly acclaimed American TV serials St. Elsewhere and Homicide: Life on the Streets. He got a chance to direct his daughter two years ago in his last film, Duets. After making the film, Gwyneth Paltrow gave the director a warm review. "I think he's the smartest person I've ever known in my life," she said. JAZZ PIANIST ELLIS LARKINS: Ellis Larkins, a jazz pianist known for his understated elegance as an improviser and his sensitivity as an accompanist, died of pneumonia on Sunday in Baltimore. He was 79. Mr. Larkins established his reputation as an accompanist with two celebrated duo albums he recorded with Ella Fitzgerald, Ella Sings Gershwin, in 1950, and Songs in a Mellow Mood, in 1954. Harrison tribute concert plannedLONDON -- Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will headline a tribute concert in memory of their late colleague, George Harrison, officials announced. The show at London's Royal Albert Hall is set for Nov. 29, the first anniversary of his death, and will feature Tom Petty, pianist Jools Holland and Ravi Shankar, the sitar virtuoso who influenced Harrison.
