ESSRIG ELEMENTARY: Students are invited to participate in the National PTA Arts recognition program, Reflections. This year's theme is "Signs of Courage." Students are asked to submit an entry in any of the four categories: literature, musical composition, photography or visual art. Entry deadline is Oct. 21. The school's Instrumental Music Booster Club will hold its annual auction Oct. 18 in the cafeteria. Howard Shapiro, meteorologist from WTVT-Ch. 13, will be guest auctioneer. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m., with live auction at 7. Admission to the auction is free, but dinner will be offered for $7. Tickets may be purchased in advance. HUNTER'S GREEN ELEMENTARY: Volunteers, sponsors and golfers are needed for the school's annual PTA golf tournament scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Nov. 15 at the Hunter's Green Country Club, 18101 Longwater Run Drive. Birthday Books are available for purchase. These books are a way of honoring and remembering a child's birthday and will be added to the school's library collection. Each Birthday Book will include a book plate with the student's name, birth date and a dedication. Call Joyce Bennett at 975-7323.

WESTCHASE ELEMENTARY: The School Advisory Council will meet at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Room 336. Items purchased for the Market Day fundraiser can be picked up from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the cafeteria.

The school's annual fall festival will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. The event will feature more than 50 booths, prizes and barbecue. Booth tickets are 50 cents apiece. Barbecue dinner will include ribs and chicken plates with baked beans, coleslaw, roll and drink. Hot dog plates include chips and drink. Meals must be ordered by Tuesday. WHARTON HIGH SCHOOL: The school at 20150 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. is seeking volunteers to help with office duties. Volunteers are needed in the Student Affairs Office -- answering telephones, helping with signing in/out and verifying absences; Guidance Office -- answering telephones and scheduling appointments; and the Media Center -- shelving books and assisting with checking in/out books. SCHOLARSHIP OFFERED: The Hillsborough County Fair is offering a $500 leadership scholarship to high school seniors. Applications are available through the Hillsborough County Cooperative Extension Services. Entry deadline is Oct. 21. DEMOCRACY SCHOLARSHIP: High school students are asked to participate in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy scholarship competition. Interested students must submit a three- to five-minute audio essay expressing their view of "Freedom's Obligation." The state's first-place winner will win a four-day tour of Washington and a $25,000 scholarship. All state winners will receive at least a $1,000 scholarship. Entry deadline is Nov. 1. WRITING CONTEST: The GFWC Lutz-Land O'Lakes Woman's Club invites students in grades 1 through 12 to participate in its annual Youth Writing Contest. Children living in Hillsborough and Pasco counties may enter a short story of 2,000 words or less or a poem of any style between eight and 30 lines. A $50 U.S. savings bond will be awarded to winners of each grade level. Deadline for submission is Nov. 15. Winning entries will be sent to the GFWC Florida Federation of Women's Club state contest.
