Man accused of picking up wallet, spending contents
MOON LAKE -- No one was watching, Pasco County sheriff's deputies said, Sept. 17 when James Wade Smith Jr. found a wallet -- with $700 inside -- on the floor at 7-Eleven.
Smith picked it up, walked out the door and spent the money, according to a deputy report.
But he was caught on tape, deputies said. Deputy Jim Campbell watched the surveillance video from the store at Moon Lake Road and State Road 52. Campbell saw a man drop the wallet and saw Smith pick it up, deputies said.
And on Friday evening, Campbell found Smith and arrested him.
Smith, 50, of 13035 Coree Ave. in Moon Lake, faces a charge of grand theft, deputies said.
According to a deputy report, Smith knew the unnamed man who dropped the wallet. He had received rides from him in the past.
Smith was being held Saturday at county jail in Land O'Lakes in lieu of $1,000 bail.
