BULLS AND GATORS: South Florida's 2008-2009 games at the Swamp look like huge steps in elevating the Bulls to full big-time status. But consider this: the first game is six years away. Six years ago USF football didn't exist. Things change. Maybe by then the Gators will be trying to catch the Bulls in the polls. Okay, maybe not.
LIGHTNING: The hockey team started a program that allows fans to designate a portion of their ticket price for selected games to go to charity. Who says sports teams don't contribute to the community?
THE RAYS: Firing manager Hal McRae (okay, kicking him upstairs) makes as much sense as firing the maitre d' because the food is terrible. GM Chuck LaMar stuck him with cheap and rancid meat and told him to make a banquet, a brunch, anything. If Chez Ray was a restaurant, the health department would have padlocked the place by now.
FLORIDA STATE: The school canceled classes Thursday and Friday, anticipating campus traffic problems because of Thursday night's home football game with Clemson. Memo to administrators: The purpose of a university is to educate, not accommodate football fans.
AMERICA'S CUP: Match racing has started in Auckland, four months of qualifying to decide which yachts will challenge New Zealand. How will we feel in January? Seasick.
WDAE-AM 620: It cut away from the final minutes of a close UF-Kentucky football game to carry a Lightning preseason hockey game in its entirety. The radio station that calls itself the Sports Animal clearly needs a better trainer when it comes to decisions like this.
