Your standard Old Testament musical
Stephan Scott Lay, above, wrote the music, lyrics and book of Uz. He also directed and is playing the lead role in the new musical that tells the story of Job, the Old Testament figure who endured many trials but did not lose his faith in God.
"Rendered hopeless, Job must now deal with the loss of his family and a backstabbing town that believes for sure Job must be cursed," says a summary on the musical's Web site, www.uzthemusical.com. "All hilarity breaks loose when Job is confronted by his closest friends, who, through bizarre antics, try to make sense of Job's suffering. From Elvis to opera . . . from ballet to square dancin' . . . from beggars to God Himself . . . nothing is quite what it seems in the madcap land of UZ!"
Uz opens Friday and continues through Oct. 20. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg. $8, $10. (727) 822-3590.
