Qualifier ousts Capriati in three
Top-seeded Jennifer Capriati lost to qualifier Alexandra Stevenson 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4 Wednesday in a second-round match of the Porsche Grand Prix in Filderstadt, Germany.
The 35th-ranked Stevenson, 21, who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon as a qualifier in 1999, played three matches to reach the main draw.
She took a 5-2 lead in the third set before Capriati broke serve and closed within 5-4. Stevenson broke back in the next game, clinching the victory in 2 hours, 11 minutes when Capriati netted a backhand.
Capriati was knocked out of the event in her first match for the third time.
MORE TENNIS: Marat Safin reached the quarterfinals of the Lyon Grand Prix with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8) victory over Wayne Arthurs in France. SAILING: Four challenger races were called because of light wind, increasing to nine the number of races postponed in three days in Auckland, New Zealand. Wednesday's races were to be sailed today. Organizers said if more races are lost, they would schedule two races a day starting Friday.
BOXING: Salim Medjkoune won a unanimous 12-round decision over champion Osamu Sato to win the WBA super bantamweight title in Tokyo. He won 116-112, 117-111 and 119-110.
MLS: Carlos Ruiz scored in the 64th minute as visiting Los Angeles reached the final with a 1-0 victory over Colorado. The Galaxy won both games of the first-to-five-points series. ... Jay Heaps scored in the third minute as visiting New England beat Columbus 1-0 in Game 2 of their semifinal series. The Revolution leads 4-1 and needs only to tie Game 3 on Saturday to advance. ... Chicago forward Ante Razov was fined $2,750 and suspended for the first three games of next season for being ejected Oct.2. Razov was red-carded for a tackle the league said demonstrated disregard for the safety of his opponent.
SOCCER: Germany will not participate in next year's Confederations Cup, an eight-nation tournament for continental champions, that includes the United States. Coach Rudi Voeller cited scheduling problems and his refusal to send a team that didn't include his nation's top stars, who want the time off after their club seasons. ... Luiz Felipe Scolari, who resigned after coaching Brazil to the World Cup title, said he is interested in coaching Mexico's national team. Mexico's federation said it would hire a coach next month.
