Man charged with stabbing another in neck
By JIM ROSS, Times Staff Writer INVERNESS -- A man was stabbed in the neck during a street fight Wednesday night, putting him in a hospital bed and the suspect in a jail cell. On Thursday, Daniel Wills, 27, remained at Citrus Memorial Hospital, where officials listed him in fair condition. Clifford W. Reed, 44, of Hernando remained at the Citrus County jail late Thursday with bail set at $5,500. He was being held on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and battery. According to an arrest affidavit prepared by Deputy Chris Dearden of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, here's what happened: Sometime before 9:10 p.m. Wednesday, Reed and his sister were arguing with Wills. The report did not provide Reed's sister's name or explain the nature of the argument. The argument occurred on the street outside Wills' home off U.S. 41 N near Independence Highway. Deputies said Reed held a knife in his right hand and stabbed Wills in the neck, drawing blood. Witnesses said Reed, his sister and another woman got into a vehicle and drove away from the fight. The witnesses said the vehicle stopped, and Reed got out, threw a beer bottle at another man, then got back in and drove away. Matt Ellis, 27, of Hernando told deputies that the thrown beer bottle hit his left knee. Ellis could not be reached for comment on Thursday. Deputies got word of the fight about 9:12 p.m. They investigated and later found Reed at a restaurant, where he was arrested, the report states. Authorities declined to disclose the address where the fight occurred out of an abundance of caution; Wills, still undergoing treatment for his injuries on Thursday, hadn't had a chance to announce whether he wished to exercise his legal right to withhold public disclosure of his address. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
