City plans bus bench inventory

NEW PORT RICHEY -- In an effort to crack down on visual roadside clutter, New Port Richey will start tallying up unpermitted roadside bus benches and figuring out how to regulate them.

New Port Richey has a 22-year-old agreement with Metropolitan Systems to put benches in 39 spots throughout the city. Metropolitan places the benches, sells ads on them and gives a percentage of ad sales to the Jaycees. But in recent years, benches from Metropolitan and other vendors have appeared on bus routes and in other places.

At a work session on Tuesday evening, council members said they want to get a count of the benches so they can figure out who owns which ones and how to control the placement of benches in the future.

Andrew Moos, who runs the statewide program for Metropolitan, says he wants to "straighten up" the bus bench situation.

"Our members live in the community too, like the community to look nice," he said.
