'Canes are improved across the board

RECORD: 5-0.

RECORD: 5-0.

OFFENSE: Citrus averages 26.4 points, up from 12.3 in 2001. Sophomore running back R.J. Cobb deserves much of the credit, but the truth is the Hurricanes have been solid everywhere. Junior quarterback Casey Snyder has matured, the wide receivers are more athletic and the line is greatly improved. Not to be overlooked is the contribution of senior running back Isaiah Webb, who makes three or four big plays every week.

DEFENSE: This unit is hot and cold when it comes to surrendering yards, but the bottom line is only 13 points a game. Initially, the secondary was thought to be the strength, but in recent weeks the Hurricanes have gotten improved play in the front seven from guys such as Chris Albrecht, Joe Berry, Justin Fletcher, Gene Himmel, Brendan Smith and Steve Strong.

OVERALL: The offense has clicked, the defense has played well and the special teams have shined. The 'Canes are 5-0 because everybody has done their part. Give the coaches credit, too. Citrus was 1-9 last year.

TOP PLAYER: Cobb is second in the county in rushing (810 yards) and has topped the 100-yard mark every week. He has a knack for making big plays at big moments. Cobb, who averages 7.7 yards a carry, can go the distance any time he touches the ball.

PLAYOFF PROSPECTS: Pretty good, but only if the 'Canes keep winning. Citrus has district games remaining against Crystal River, Dunnellon and North Marion and needs to go 2-1 to secure an automatic playoff berth. An at-large spot is a possibility, too, but 7-8 wins will be needed.
