FORT WALTON BEACH -- A couple were charged with child neglect after authorities removed their 8-year-old daughter, 91 cats and a dog from a home where they lived in filth.

Police and Panhandle Animal Welfare Society officials said the home of Milan and Cynthia Jurkovic, who were arrested Wednesday, reeked from accumulated cat excrement. Officers and PAWS workers wore masks to enter the dwelling.

The cats had overrun and all but destroyed three of the four bedrooms, police Detective Tim Sheldon said. He said the girl, now in the care of other family members, apparently slept in the living room or with her parents.

PAWS took the cats. The dog, old and seriously ill, had to be euthanized
