Series with no Yankees incomplete

For a Bronx-born and New York-raised guy who is in the later innings of life, a World Series without the Yankees is like a Thanksgiving without a turkey, a Christmas without a tree.

For a Bronx-born and New York-raised guy who is in the later innings of life, a World Series without the Yankees is like a Thanksgiving without a turkey, a Christmas without a tree.

The inevitable "It's good for baseball" is as useless for my pain now as "It's for your own good" was many years ago, when my mother sent me to bed without supper. Well, it isn't, and it wasn't. So there.
-- Jack Bray, Dunedin

Divine justice

Hooray! God hates the Yankees, too.

Make Neuheisel ineligible

Colorado is being severly penalized for transgressions caused by Rick Neuheisel. This is the collegiate norm: The coach cheats but has success and goes to another school with a big raise.

What the NCAA ought to do in cases like this is make the coach ineligible. It should tell the University of Washington that any games Neuheisel coaches will be forfeited. Any nonconference school that signs a contract to play Washington while he is coach has to forfeit the game, too.

This is a way to stop having the kids pay for something the coach did. Penalize whoever actually committed the crime: athletic director, assistant coach, whoever. Stop penalizing programs.
-- Ernest E. Lane, New Port Richey

McRae deserved firing

If I have to read one more article about how Hal McRae did not deserve to be fired, I'll lose my lunch. The Rays never said that McRae was the entire problem. They know their issues are far too deep to blame on one person. However, they did recognize he was incapable of making rational decisions and for that, he had to go.

As the manager, McRae determined who would play and when. I can recall at least 10 games the Rays lost as a result of McRae's failure to make the right move late in the game. It is McRae's inability to grasp the strategic aspect of the game that made him an inept failure and caused his demise.

If fans prefer to blame Chuck LaMar for the Rays' failure, then it should be for retaining McRae for as long as he did.
