Sparky won't shadow pupil

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sparky Anderson is interested in returning to spring training, but he's not interested in being back in the spotlight.

So when Tigers manager Alan Trammell asked Anderson to help in training camp, Anderson applied the brakes.

"I told him, "Don't put anything in concrete,' " said Anderson, who started Trammell at shortstop throughout his 17 seasons as Tigers manager. " "Come springtime or a little before spring and you decide you would like to have me just come down and be there a little bit, I'll do whatever you want me to do. But I will not be a part of taking anything from you. I just won't do that. That is you now.' "

Anderson said he will "be more than happy" to go to spring training at Lakeland but won't be offended if Trammell changes his mind and doesn't want him to go.

ASTROS: Catcher Gregg Zaun had surgery to repair a partially torn tendon in his right elbow. He should be ready for spring training.

INDEPENDENTS: Kansas City's new minor-league team will be called the T-Bones. The Northern League team expects to begin play in June.
