Old Hyde Park Village rezoning has hearingBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published October 16, 2002 TAMPA -- A controversial request to rezone a portion of Old Hyde Park Village will go before the City Council on Thursday night. The company that owns the village wants to rezone sections of the shopping center, including the former Jacobson's store and the movie theaters, to accommodate a broader range of tenants. They say the current zoning is too restrictive and limits the types of businesses that can lease space. Area homeowners have resisted the rezoning on grounds that it would give the center along Swann Avenue too much leeway. They fear a high-traffic business, such as a rumored grocery store, would disrupt the residential neighborhood. Village officials have refused to discuss prospective tenants but say a grocery store would be among the allowable uses. The rezoning was postponed last month because some condo owners in the village were not notified of the meeting. Representatives of Madison Marquette, which owns the village, also wanted more time to discuss it with neighbors. The city's Architectural Review Commission has recommended the rezoning but with several caveats, including a provision that would ban a parking lot behind the theaters. Village officials have said a parking lot could be beneficial to a grocery store. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 315 E Kennedy Blvd. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
