In the newsCompiled from Times wires© St. Petersburg Times published October 18, 2002 Del McCoury takes awardsLOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Del McCoury Band took home three International Bluegrass Music Awards on Thursday, including best entertainer in bluegrass music and a first-time win for song of the year. It was the sixth entertainer of the year award for McCoury and his band. Bluegrass veteran Ricky Skaggs and country singer Patty Loveless hosted the awards ceremony at the Kentucky Center for the Arts in downtown Louisville. It was broadcast live on more than 300 U.S. radio stations and 14 foreign stations. Del Coury and his band won song of the year for their cover of the Richard Thompson-penned 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. Dan Tyminski, a member of Alison Krauss' Union Station, and O Brother, Where Art Thou's Man of Constant Sorrow, earned his second win for male vocalist. Rhonda Vincent took female vocalist for the third consecutive year. Album of the year went to Down From the Mountain, which was recorded at the Ryman Auditorium. Dobro innovator Kirby diesNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Beecher Ray Kirby, an innovator of the dobro guitar and country comedian on the Grand Ole Opry who performed as Bashful Brother Oswald, died Thursday at his home. He was 90. Mr. Kirby suffered from a lengthy illness, said Grand Ole Opry spokeswoman Darlene Bieber. Mr. Kirby was a member of the Smoky Mountain Boys -- the backing group for Country Music Hall of Fame member Roy Acuff -- from 1939 until Acuff's death in 1992.
