Locks of Love to reap benefit from 'hair scare'
By ADRIENNE P. SAMUELS "For people on the fence about cutting their hair, this gives them a purpose." said salon owner Jill Somers. If you need a haircut and have more than a couple of inches to spare, now would be a good time to donate to Locks of Love. However, if you don't have any hair to donate, you can still help an area salon raise $5,000 to give to the organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who have lost their hair because of a medical condition. Called "Hair Scare 2002," the shear madness starts at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Somers & Co. Salon and Spa on McMullen-Booth Road. There will be a raffle, a silent auction and a DJ. The Grim Reaper will be on hand to supervise events. The salon has been working with Locks of Love for three years now, owner Jill Somers said. This is the first time the shop has held a benefit, she said. "It's always such a good thing to give back," Somers said. "We have a lot of clients who have come in with breast cancer. It's a pretty traumatic thing when you lose your hair." Starting this week, several long-haired models kicked off the event by cutting their hair for the cause. That hair is being collected into ponytails and will be given to Locks of Love, the salon said. The salon is also selling colorful hand-sewn, clip-on hair pieces to help raise money for Locks of Love. A two-piece package costs $15. If you wish to donate hair, it must be healthy, not chemically damaged and must be at least ten inches long. A Locks of Love haircut is free of charge. Entrance to the benefit is free.
