Daily fishing report

Kingfish have arrived in good numbers and are sky-rocketing live bait from Tarpon Springs to the Egmont Shipping Channel.

Every angler waiting for the major run should be happy this weekend. The Clearwater hard bottom, Rube Allyn, Betty Rose and Egmont Shipping Channel hold large numbers of hungry kings feeding on live bait. After the first cold front the Gulf of Mexico comes alive with kings.

The most effective way to catch big kingfish is with live bait, a No. 3 wire leader and a stinger rig, commonly a No. 4 treble hook that dangles along the bait and often is inserted into the bait's tail. Live threadfins, shad, blue runners, mullet and whitebait produce large kingfish. Slow-troll with 15- to 20-pound tackle for near-shore action.

The biggest kingfish are solitary females that stay near the beach. Start fishing at sunrise along the beach, move offshore during the day and return to the beach near sunset. You can plan on good kingfishing for six weeks.
