TAMPA -- Thirty-one years between homecomings. Twenty-six seconds between touchdowns. Yes, Middleton has established a tradition. The Tigers, playing a homecoming game for the first time since 1971, used a 32-point first-half to defeat Berkeley Prep 38-19 on Friday. Playing at Tampa Bay Tech, Middleton got a titanic effort from one of its smallest players.

Sophomore Germain Lewis, a 5-foot-6, 150-pound running back, returned from a pulled muscle and had 176 yards of total offense and two touchdowns.

He rushed for a career-high 122 yards on 19 carries, including a 10-yard touchdown, and caught a 54-yard touchdown. And quarterback Lebron Marshall and defensive back Arnold Jones electrified even coach Harry Hubbard by scoring twice late in the first half.

Marshall's 66-yard touchdown run and Jones' 58-yard interception return on back-to-back plays put Middleton (2-2) up 32-7 with 1.6 seconds left in the half. "It happened so fast that it really surprised me," Hubbard said. "But these guys have a lot of skill and talent.

"I just thank God I have the opportunity to be associated with them."

Before that, Berkeley (3-4) was on the verge of closing the deficit.

Down 20-7, the Bucs had the ball first and goal at the 7. But Claxton Perry intercepted Derek Hatcher in the end zone, and Marshall's run capped an 80-yard, five-play drive. Jones had two interceptions, and Middleton forced four turnovers. "(Winning on homecoming) hasn't hit me yet," Hubbard said. "I think it's more for the alumni because they want to keep the tradition of winning now.

"I guess we have to try and keep up the record."
