Candidate turns comic at forum

David Werder must have confused St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with a comedy club.

Werder, from Spring Hill, is a write-in candidate for Florida's 5th Congressional District seat. His homespun humor had the audience howling at the Sugarmill Woods candidates forum, which was held last week at the church.

You had to be there: Werder told a joke about cows blowing horns from their hindquarters, something about soapy enemas and other stuff too bizarre to repeat in this family newspaper.

Republican challenger Ginny Brown-Waite admitted Werder was a tough act to follow.

"I'd like to be remembered as the candidate from Hernando County that did not mention soapy enemas tonight," said the state senator from Brooksville.

WELCOME, NEIGHBOR: Hometown credentials aren't as valuable as they used to be.

Former Sheriff Charlie Dean, a Republican, told the Sugarmill Woods audience members they should elect him to the state House of Representatives. As a native Citrus County resident, he said, he knows the area's needs best.

"How many of you are lifelong Citrus Countians?" Dean asked the audience.

A few hands shot up.

"Golly," he said, "I'm an endangered species."

IS IT BIGGER THAN A BREADBOX? In his quest for the District 11 state Senate seat, Lee Cannon told the Sugarmill Woods audience, he has crisscrossed the four-county district more times than he can count.

The district hugs the coastline starting in Pinellas County, running north through Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties.

"It's so big, I need a vacation to drive from one end to the other," the Democratic candidate said.
