Woman charged in home invasion
By JAMIE JONES, Times Staff Writer
RIDGE MANOR -- A 26-year-old Ridge Manor woman was charged with home invasion and aggravated battery in connection with an August 2001 incident that left an elderly woman bleeding and bruised. Authorities charged Rebekah Rayford Harris of 4151 Burwell Road with breaking into Jocie McLean's home last year and stealing her 1998 Jeep Cherokee. McLean, 71, told deputies that she had been on her porch finishing laundry at 6:50 p.m. on Aug. 13, 2001, when she walked inside her Ridge Manor home and found Harris, her neighbor. Harris asked to use the telephone. McLean said she told Harris to use the phone and leave. She said Harris picked up a cordless telephone and attacked her, causing bruises and cuts on her face, legs and arms. McLean said she fell and lost consciousness while Harris took her car. Authorities said Harris picked up a friend, John Steven Mathis of Zephyrhills, and went to Dade City, where they broke into a home and assaulted a man. The pair fled again and a deputy saw the car, which had been reported stolen. Authorities said the pair tried to run over a Pasco County deputy, who fired his gun as another deputy took aim at the Jeep. The pair ran into woods and were discovered by a police dog. Harris was held in the Land O'Lakes jail before she was returned to the Hernando County Jail and arrested on local charges Friday. -- Jamie Jones can be reached at 754-6114.
