One killed, one seriously hurt in head-on accident

WIMAUMA -- A 71-year-old man driving a pickup died after a head-on crash with a sport utility vehicle on U.S. 301 Sunday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Juan Morales, 28, of 5704 Lincoln Ave., Tampa, was driving his Ford Explorer west on Willow Road near the intersection of U.S. 301. At 7:40 p.m., he made a right turn onto U.S. 301 and crossed into the other lane, striking the truck carrying Warren Morrow of 3107 Hillsborough Lane, Wimauma, authorities said.

Morrow was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 56-year-old Betty Hartshorn of 3149 Hillsborough Lane, Wimauma, was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where she was in serious condition.

Morales was also taken to Tampa General, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Troopers are investigating the crash and charges are pending.
