ST. PETERSBURG -- A 36-year-old St. Petersburg man was killed when his car veered off northbound Interstate 275 and struck the concrete base of a pedestrian overpass at 22nd Avenue N, police said.

Florida Highway Patrol officers said Douglas S. Heahlke of 7219 14th St. N was northbound in the center lane about 10:16 p.m. Friday when his 1990 Ford sedan veered off the interstate.

Police withheld his identity until relatives could be notified. A husband and father of two children, Heahlke originally was from California and worked as an accountant in St. Petersburg.
