COWBOYS: Running back Emmitt Smith is only 93 yards short of breaking one of the league's most hallowed records, Walter Payton's career rushing mark of 16,726 yards, and he wants to get it done Sunday against Seattle. ... Quincy Carter is out as the starting QB and will be replaced by rookie Chad Hutchinson. Carter threw four interceptions in a 9-6 overtime loss to Arizona.

EAGLES: Linebacker Keith Adams was claimed off waivers. To make room for Adams, who was cut by the Cowboys last week, the Eagles released linebacker Quinton Caver, a second-round pick last year.

FALCONS: Michael Vick broke his team record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 91. He had 72 in the opening loss to Green Bay. ... Ray Buchanan had an interception in his return to the lineup after serving a four-game suspension for using steroids. ... Travis Jervey, a key player on special teams, is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee. ... T.J. Duckett is doubtful Sunday with an ailing right foot.

49ERS: The team entered Sunday first in the NFL in yards per rush (5.4) and third-down conversion percentage (48.3). Against the Saints it averaged 5.7 yards on 25 rushes and converted nine of its 12 third downs.

LIONS: Linebacker Richard Jordan had an MRI on his sprained left knee and is doubtful for the Buffalo game Sunday. ... Tight end John Owens sprained his left shoulder and is questionable. ... Wide receiver Germane Crowell had only minor swelling in his surgically repaired knee and is expected to play against Buffalo. Coach Marty Mornhinweg also hopes to have TE Mikhael Ricks (groin) and WR Bill Schroeder (hamstring) back for the Bills game. ... Receiver Germane Crowell played for the first time since injuring his knee on Oct. 21, 2001, and caught two passes for 21 yards.

PACKERS: Brett Favre won't need an operation on his sprained left knee, and since the Packers are off Sunday, he shouldn't miss any games.

PANTHERS: Carolina played without two of its three starting linebackers, middle man Dan Morgan and strongside linebacker Mark Fields. Both were out with strained groins. Also, receiver Isaac Byrd (abdominal strain), considered likely to play, wasn't able to.

RAMS: Cornerback Aeneas Williams will miss the rest of the season after surgery to stabilize torn ligaments in his badly sprained left ankle. Williams also broke his left shin Sunday.

REDSKINS: Guard Tre Johnson returned and signed a one-year deal. Johnson, who was cut at the end of training camp by Cleveland, was a second-round draft pick in 1994 and played seven seasons.

VIKINGS: Minnesota has lost 13 consecutive road games.
