Forum to address fire district issues

Should the Spring Hill Fire Rescue district be independent? Here's your chance to find out.

SPRING HILL -- Spring Hill residents who are curious about their fire district's quest for independence will have the chance to quiz their fire board tonight at a public forum at the Springstead High School theater.

Fire commissioners and Chief J.J. Morrison will make a brief presentation about why they want voter support on Nov. 5 for a referendum seeking to free the Spring Hill Fire Rescue district from the oversight of the Hernando County Commission.

From there, the floor will be turned over to members of the audience for a question and answer session.

The forum will begin at 7 p.m. But whether questions take 15 minutes or four hours, fire officials say they will stick around as long as needed.

"It will end when everybody is satisfied that all of their questions have at least been attempted to be answered," said Morrison.

As an added enticement to draw people to the forum, free hot dogs and sodas will be offered, Morrison said.

While the fire district has five locally elected fire commissioners who make policy, set salaries and ambulance rates, the five members of the Hernando County Commission have authority for ultimate approval of the fire district's budget.

The question Spring Hill voters must answer on election day is if they want the County Commission's oversight to end.

The Springstead High theater is at the southwest corner of Mariner and Linden boulevards, just across the street from Springstead's main campus, which is at 3300 Mariner Blvd.
