Pending sale of water utility leaves bitter taste

Editor: The politicians of two Florida cities are about to purchase Florida Water Services (a company that supplies drinking water and sewer services to Hernando and Citrus). They did so in secret, knowing the deal was shameful, which makes it even more of a disgrace. They did it to make a profit.

Are we now so degraded that we have to worry which of our neighbors will be trying to find a way to profit from our natural and vital resources? "All hail the spirit of 9/11."

Our commissioners blundered while we were plundered. This deal must be stopped.

1. Hernando County no longer has any control over water prices, quality or plant upkeep. Our water rights have been lost. Think what that means.

2. Florida Water Services still runs the plants, but has no legal obligation to its customers in Hernando or Citrus.

3. All money customers pay goes outside the county to pay off the purchase loan (we are paying to lose our water rights).

4. If profit can be made, where were our commissioners? The plundering cities purchased it to make a profit; prices will go up, quality down. We have lost all control. Think! Think!

5. The deal smells like sewer and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement should investigate.

6. Hernando eventually will have to purchase the plants and Hernando County people will pay a heavy price. The commissioners will leave office with this anchor around Hernando's neck.

7. Commissioners, get innovative and fight. Hook up customers to the system we control. Destroy the customer base of plundering cities, and absorb the employees into our system. They are not at fault.

And send the rats back into the sewers.

Shameful deeds seem to be accepted these days, excuses made and no one seems to care (9/11 notwithstanding). I care. I can't believe I am alone. My commissioners have been very silent. God bless America -- we need it.

Letter critical of hospital omitted pertinent information

Editor: Re: Oak Hill Hospital needs to give up its feuding ways, Oct. 16 letter to the editor from Michael J. Kowalik:

Oak Hill Hospital is doing just fine. In answer to the letter, there are some facts omitted that leave everybody with a distorted view. He stated Oak Hill Hospital eliminated its OB-GYN department. That is correct, but why didn't he mention there are plans to open a new heart surgery facility, therefore eliminating valuable time sending patients to Bayonet Point? I really don't think there are more babies born than there are heart problems in Spring Hill.

Also, if you take the time to drive around the back of the hospital, you will see they are now building a large addition to the emergency room.

So, in all fairness, I don't think it is fair to write such a negative letter. You probably think I am biased; you bet I am. I volunteer at Oak Hill and love every minute of it. You should try it, Mr. Kowalik. You might like it.

School Board members need to support superintendent

Editor: The best superintendent we have ever had is Dr. Wendy Tellone.

I feel compelled to write because I am concerned with what I saw on Hernando Instructional TV.

I am saddened that School Board members Sandra Nicholson and Gail David have not put aside their petty differences and acknowledged what a fantastic job Dr. Tellone has done in the short year she has been superintendent. They tried their very best to vote her out.

As citizens of this community, and especially those of us with children in the schools, we can thank our lucky stars that Jim Malcolm, John Druzbick and Robert Wiggins had the courage to allow her to shine. Even the teachers are thrilled with her personal concern and informative input in our school system.
