SPRING HILL -- A 45-year-old Spring Hill man shot by a sheriff's deputy died at a St. Petersburg hospital on Tuesday.

Cassandra Morrell of Bayfront Medical Center said that John Thomas Tenison died at 2:42 p.m. Tuesday. She had inaccurately told reporters late Tuesday that Tenison was still in critical condition.

Deputy Scott Lamia, 26, shot Tenison after responding to a domestic violence call Monday night.

Tenison was wanted for stalking his ex-wife, Sarah.

She called deputies after discovering Tenison in her home, authorities said. She said her children, 16 and 13, had been letting him inside while she was at work.

Records show that she divorced him earlier this year. She said Tenison had threatened to kill her.

She called the Sheriff's Office repeately in recent months to report that her husband was violating a court order to stay away from her home on Tunisia Avenue, authorities said.

She thought Tenison was living out of his car.

On Monday, deputies again responded to the home and told Tenison to leave.

He returned later and tried to deflate a tire on his ex-wife's van, and she again called authorities.

Lamia spotted Tenison's white Buick nearby and tried to stop him, but he fled, authorities said.

Lamia abandoned the chase because of pedestrians in the neighborhood, authorities said. But about 30 minutes later, he again saw Tenison.

Lamia got out of his car and Tenison sped toward him, sheriff's officials said. Lamia fired repeatedly.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

Lamia is on paid leave until investigators decide whether he was justified in using deadly force.
