California Dreamin'

READ ALL ABOUT IT: Whereas the Orange County Register took the oversimplified approach for the first World Series in Anaheim, the San Francisco Chronicle has been sophisticated. Besides the traditional coverage, it has had articles by its business writer on the economic impact, its science writer on the physics of Barry Bonds' swing, its "pop culture critic" on the crowd scene and a review of the on-field drama from its "arts and culture critic."

HELPING HAND: The Giants had a good-luck charm in their dugout Wednesday: manager Dusty Baker's 3-year-old son, Darren. The Giants were 6-0 when Darren was the batboy and appeared to miss him when he missed the past two games because he was sick with a sinus infection and an earache. "I couldn't keep him away anymore," Baker said. "He's on some antibiotics, and he's raring to go."

LISTEN UP: If you listen carefully, you can hear history being made at the Series: Renel Brooks-Moon is the first woman to be the public-address announcer for a World Series. "It's such a privilege," she said. "Any time you're a first, you're under more scrutiny and all eyes are on you." Brooks-Moon, 44, has been the voice of the Giants for three years, having won the job after doing some TV work for the cross-bay A's. She also works as a morning radio host and an entertainment reporter for a local TV station, but she says baseball is her first love.
