Oakland's Macha turns down Brewers offer

SAN FRANCISCO -- Athletics bench coach Ken Macha declined the Brewers' managerial offer on Wednesday and is expected to accept Oakland's job.

"I felt comfortable he might have been a pretty good candidate for us, but we'll move on from here," Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin said.

Melvin has four other candidates: Arizona bench coach Bob Melvin, who is not related to Doug Melvin, New York Yankees third base coach Willie Randolph, Brewers bench coach Cecil Cooper and Atlanta third-base coach Ned Yost.

CARDINALS: Closer Jason Isringhausen had surgery on his right shoulder that could limit his availability early next season. Team doctor George Paletta said the operation was a "cleanup" of the shoulder and that the rotator cuff was sound. Isringhausen probably will need to catch up when spring training begins, the team said.

INDIANS: Eric Wedge, 34, manager of Cleveland's Triple-A team in Buffalo for two years, interviewed for the manager's job. Joel Skinner, interim manager for the final 76 games, appears to be the favorite. Fredi Gonzalez, manager of Atlanta's Triple-A Richmond club, is set to interview today.

PIRATES: Former major-leaguer Rusty Kuntz was named first-base coach. He played 277 games with the White Sox, Twins and Tigers and hit the winning sacrifice fly in the last game of the 1984 World Series for Detroit.

RED SOX: Jim Duquette, assistant general manager of the Mets, met with Boston president Larry Lucchino to interview for the general manager's job.

HANK AARON AWARD: The Giants' Barry Bonds and the Rangers' Alex Rodriguez were honored for the second straight year with broadcasters voting them the best hitters.

SCHEDULE CHANGES: As many as 20 Expos home games could be moved to Puerto Rico next year under a plan that also might move the season-opening series between the Mariners and Athletics from Oakland to Japan.
