IRC's McMillan to sign with Stetson

Gabe McMillan, Pinellas County's leading scorer last season as a junior, has orally committed to attend Division I Stetson next year on an athletic scholarship.

The Indian Rocks Christian standout, already the Golden Eagles' all-time leading scorer with more than 2,000 points, said he was looking for a college close to home where he could expect some playing time, and the Hatters fit the bill.

"I kind of wanted to commit early," said McMillan, a 6-foot point guard with excellent shooting range. "I knew I wanted to, as long as I found a good fit. It does take a lot of the pressure off (heading into the season)."

McMillan had 97 3-pointers last season and averaged 26 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game while leading the Golden Eagles to a 32-4 record and the Class A state semifinals. He was a Times first-team all-county selection for the same reason coach Joe Frost thinks he will excel at the next level: an all-around game.

"He obviously has all the basic abilities," Frost said. "He can shoot, he can jump and he is a scorer. But what he really brings is a calmness. When he's playing, he doesn't get rattled. He loves the pressure."

McMillan said he expects to sign with Stetson on Nov. 13, the first day prospective college players can do so.
