Bilirakis for Congress© St. Petersburg Times published October 28, 2002 U.S. Rep. Michael Bilirakis is seeking his 11th term in Congress. With the power of incumbency, a healthy campaign account and wide popularity, the Tarpon Springs Republican remains a formidable opponent. Our main complaint with Bilirakis is that he has followed the Republican House's archconservative leadership on some issues, such as a prescription drug benefit for the elderly, when a more conciliatory approach would have better served his constituents. At other times, however, he has been a generous benefactor to deserving projects and programs. No doubt, along with Rep. C.W. Bill Young, Bilirakis has given the Tampa Bay area considerable clout in Congress. The most interesting political speculation about Bilirakis is not whether he will win this race, but when he will choose to retire. The only thing standing between Bilirakis and the start of a third decade in the House is Democrat Chuck Kalogianis and a write-in candidate. Kalogianis, a New Port Richey lawyer, is making his second run for elected office, and both times he has made reckless allegations in an effort to gain publicity. He has not presented himself as a reasonable choice over his experienced opponent. The Times recommends Michael Bilirakis in Congressional District 9.
