Campaign signs don't add to the vote tally

© St. Petersburg Times
published October 29, 2002

Editor: I would like to make a comment regarding all those political signs we see everywhere.

Festooning the countryside with hundreds of signs imploring voters to cast their ballot for you really doesn't amount to a hill of beans on Election Day.

What the voters and taxpayers will really consider is your performance over the past four years. If you did a good job, then you have nothing to worry about. If not, then adios.

VA employee could use some cheering up

Editor: Re: He draws veterans' criticism and kudos, Oct. 13 Times:

Why do they always kick a man when he is down?

Deron Mikal has just gone through serious hip surgery and will be off for six weeks. Anyone wanting to send cards may do so at the following address: VA Services of Hernando County, Airport Industrial Park, 166110 Aviation Loop Drive, Brooksville, FL 34609-6803.

President George W. Bush turned down a budget request of $275-million to increase hospital care and disability requests. Not Mikal. After him are 220,000 people in Washington and around the country to handle veterans' requests.

You be the judge of commissioners' wisdom

Editor: Was it wise to stop Florida Water Services from drilling two new wells when Spring Hill residents have to flush their toilets two or three times because of low water pressure? Or, is it wise to keep giving out permits to all the multibuilding affordable housing and luxury apartment buildings in the same area?

Was it wise to let two small towns in North Florida purchase Florida Water Services while the commissioners bickered about the price?

Was it wise for a couple of you to talk in support of a union for county employees.

Was it wise to give all county employees a 3.5 percent cost of living increase when our government gave 1.2 percent to most of the county residents who are retired?

Was it wise to keep giving companies county contracts when they owed the county hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes, and then the county auctions working people's houses and lots for owing a few hundred dollars?
