Managers for compensation

Here are a few instances in the past 70 years of baseball managers being traded for players, managers, cash or not at all because sides couldn't agree on compensation:

AUG. 3, 1960: In the second half of the season, the Tigers traded manager Jimmy Dykes to the Indians for their manager, Joe Gordon. Jo-Jo White and Billy Hitchcock managed the clubs for one game until their traded managers arrived. Gordon resigned later that season. He went on to manage the Kansas City A's in 1961 and the Royals during their inaugural 1969 season.

NOV. 27, 1967: The Mets sent pitcher Bill Denehy and $100,000 to acquire manager Gil Hodges from the Washington Senators. Jim Lemon was named Senators manager. Hodges and the Mets won the World Series in 1969. Denehy pitched in three games for the Senators in 1968 and pitched his last game in 1971 when he went 0-3 with a 4.22 ERA in 31 games with the Tigers.

OCTOBER 1973-JANUARY 1974: Oakland manager Dick Williams, upset with owner Charlie Finley, tells his team that he is resigning after the A's second straight World Series title. Two days later, however, Finley says he will not release Williams from his contract unless he receives appropriate compensation. The Yankees hold a news conference Dec. 18 to announce they have hired Williams to manage the 1974 team but become embroiled in a legal showdown with Finley. It takes American League president Joe Cronin to rule that Williams' contract with the Yankees was no good. New York settled on Bill Virdon as its manager and Williams remained out of baseball until June 1974, when the Angels paid Finley cash for the rights to his former manager.

NOV. 5, 1976: The Pirates sent catcher Manny Sanguillen and $100,000 to the A's for manager Chuck Tanner. Sanguillen played in 152 games for the A's in 1977, batting .275 with six homers and 58 RBIs, before finishing his career with the Pirates from 1978-80. Tanner managed the Pirates for nine seasons and compiled a 711-685 overall record.

MAY 15, 1989: After being fired by the Yankees in favor of Dallas Green after the 1988 season, Lou Piniella became the center of a dispute between the Yankees and Blue Jays several months later. New York owner George Steinbrenner gave the Blue Jays permission to talk to Piniella, who was serving as the Yankees' color analyst on television broadcasts and was obligated to remain with New York through 1991. The Yankees and Blue Jays made proposals for compensation, but Steinbrenner didn't bite. Piniella stayed in New York until being released to take the Reds job in 1990, and the Blue Jays hired Cito Gaston on an interim basis. Both men won World Series titles.
Non-baseball deals
Trading for a manager or coach is not unique to baseball. Here are a couple of recent examples from the NFL:
JAN. 27, 2000: The Patriots trade a first-round draft choice to the Jets for coach Bill Belichick.
FEB. 18, 2002: The Bucs send two first-round draft choices, two second-rounders and $8-million to the Raiders for the rights to Jon Gruden.
