Fox, Christie to begin season on suspension

NEW YORK -- The Lakers' Rick Fox was suspended for six games, the Kings' Doug Christie was banished for two, and every Sacramento player who left the bench during a fight with the Lakers got off scot-free.

In a surprising ruling Monday by NBA vice president Stu Jackson, Sacramento players were not punished as badly as they may have expected for their part in a bench-clearing brawl during the first quarter of a preseason game Friday.

Jackson ruled that because the players left the bench to join a fracas in a hallway underneath the stands, rather than on the court, they would not receive the customary one-game suspension.

CAVALIERS: Rookie guard Dajuan Wagner will begin the season on the injured list after being hospitalized for nearly two weeks with a bladder infection.

HEAT: Center Alonzo Mourning was placed on the injured list, more than a month after doctors said his kidney condition would sideline him indefinitely.

KNICKS: Latrell Sprewell was placed on the injured list because of his broken right hand. He will miss at least five games.

RAPTORS: Forward Lamond Murray had surgery to repair a ligament tear in his right foot and is expected to miss at least eight weeks.

76ERS: Olden Polynice was waived two weeks after being signed.
