OLDSMAR -- Brittany Jones shoved Brittany Lincicome at the 11th tee.
With all of the laughter, it would have been hard to take the gesture as anything but playful.
Although Lincicome beat Jones last year for the district title, there were no hard feelings Tuesday between the two juniors who have been playing against each other since they were 9.
Like last year, Jones, East Lake's top golfer, was shooting for a realistic second place Tuesday in the Class 2A, District 7 tournament against Lincicome, the nation's fifth-ranked junior according to Golfweek.
Playing as an individual for Seminole, Lincicome shot 67 at East Lake Woodlands to win, and Jones was next at 81.
"We had fun," Lincicome said. "We were just messing around. We were all playing good."
They brought the other members of the foursome, Mitchell's Amanda Moore and River Ridge's Heather Hagerman, in on the game, laughing it up for almost the entire 18 holes.
"I was having so much fun, I was laughing the whole time," said Jones, who kept her demeanor light even after shooting 7 on the first hole.
There were a few times when the smiles disappeared and the conversation hushed, especially on the more difficult back nine.
Moore hit into the bunker on the 11th and took two shots to get out, earning a bogey. She said the sand had been much softer during her practice round Monday.
"Today, my club hit the ground and bounced back up," Moore said.
Lincicome, who had seven birdies, bogeyed the 15th and tried to make up for it on No. 16.
"I was trying to drive for the green and I pulled it," said Lincicome, whose shot dropped in the water.
The four meet again at regionals Nov. 4 at Heritage Oaks in Sarasota, where Hagerman said she hopes they will be paired together again.
Mitchell won the district championship at 378 after its top four golfers shot under 100. River Ridge finished second; Palm Harbor University and East Lake rounded out the teams advancing to the regional tournament.
