Patrick Healey defeated Michael Gaither for the Greater Kansas City Classic title Oct. 20 and earned $40,000 and a berth in the Tournament of Champions.

Healey beat Gaither 243-227 for his first victory in five years. Gaither, making his first TV appearance, earned $20,000. In the semifinals, Gaither defeated Paul Fleming 236-183 and Healey stopped Tommy Delutz Jr. 226-185. Delutz and Fleming tied for third.

Tarpon Springs' 10-time winner Steve Hoskins led after the first round with a nine-game 2,080 pinfall. He lost to Robert Smith 4-3 in the round of 32. Ocala's Walter Ray Williams Jr. also lost in the round of 32. Ocala's Roger Bowker, Clermont's Norm Duke and Lake Worth's Steve Wilson missed the cut.

Brian Voss defeated Danny Wiseman 253-247 to capture the Memphis Open and his 22nd career title Sunday. The victory, worth $40,000, tied Voss with Marshall Holman for ninth all-time.

"It just doesn't get any better when you win like that," Voss said. "When you're a kid, you dream about throwing two strikes in the 10th to win."

It was the fourth time Voss has beaten Wiseman in a final.

In the semifinals, Voss beat Bryon Smith and Wiseman knocked off Lonnie Waliczek. Smith and Waliczek tied for third. Smith is the top money-winner after five events with $62,250. Chris Barnes is second at $56,750 and Healey third at $53,700.

The tour is at Vernon Hills, Ill., for the Miller High Life Open with the ESPN finals 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday.

TIFFANY'S FIRST: Tiffany Stanbrough defeated Kelly Kulick 194-188 to win the Wheelchair Awareness Classic and $9,000 Oct. 24 at Mesa, Ariz. It was Stanbrough's first pro win.

Stanbrough ousted Michelle Feldman and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard 224-199-189 in the shootout, then eliminated Wendy Macpherson 231-200.

The Greater San Diego Classic ends Friday. The finals will be aired at 10 p.m. Monday on ESPN2.

BWTC FINALE: Fourteen teams, including two qualifiers from Seminole Lanes, shoot for the $28,000 prize fund in the 10th annual ABC Brunswick World Team Challenge Nov. 10-13 at the Gold Coast Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

The Brunswick squad of Jeff Poholsky, Robert Alexander, Roger Kossert, Doug Becker, Bruce Hollen and Mike Chontos won the February regional at Seminole Lanes. Kegel Training Center of Sebring, with Larry Barwick, Sam Zurich, Mike Tagariella, David Tessman and Norm Titus, won the September regional.

RENEWED EVENT: The ABC is reviving its popular Sport Bowling Challenge with a new sponsor, Storm Bowling Products, during the ABC's 100th Championships Tournament at Knoxville, Tenn.

The Challenge will be held on 12 specially installed lanes adjacent to the 48 ABC Tournament lanes in the Knoxville Convention Center. The Challenge again will use a two-game sweeper type format, and a doubles event has been added. The tournament was introduced at the 2000 ABC Championships Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., where nearly $800,000 in prize money was distributed. The championships run Feb. 8 through June 22.

HELMER DIES: ABC director-at-large Kermit Helmer, 59, died Oct. 20 in Buffalo, N.Y., after a short battle with cancer. Helmer initiated the men's and women's programs at Erie Community College in Buffalo and led the Kats to 15 National Junior College Athletic Association men's titles and 22 NJCAA women's titles.
