DUNEDIN -- A herald of fall -- for art lovers, anyway -- is the 39th annual Dunedin Art Harvest on Saturday and Sunday in Highlander Park. More than 200 artists in all media will rim the scenic little lake with their booths, along with food vendors and a free children's art tent.
It's the first of the big three outdoor arts and crafts festivals in the Tampa Bay area each season, and the juried competition will award more than $20,000 to winning artists. (The other big festivals are Gasparilla in Tampa in late winter and Mainsail in St. Petersburg in the spring. Festival Beth-El in St. Petersburg in January is also a big deal, but it's indoors.)
While you're there, visit the Dunedin Fine Arts Center, on the grounds. "Journeys," a new show, explores the idea of journeys, literal and metaphorical. Included in the exhibition are ancient artifacts, tribal art featuring African masks (with one that celebrates an airplane as a deity in an example of cross-cultural referencing), and work by Rodger Kingston, who photographed the view through train windows over a 15-year period. The David L. Mason Children's Art Museum in the fine arts center has a show of constellations and a 1955 Airstream trailer, plus interactive stations.
