TAMPA -- A 5-year-old boy was in critical but stable condition Thursday after he was hit by a pickup while trying to cross E Columbus Drive.

Dontavius Bryant of 505 E Columbus Drive was heading home about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday after playing football in a church parking lot across the street. He darted into the street and was hit by a burgundy pickup.

The pickup continued without stopping. It may have some front-end damage, police said Thursday.

Tampa Police spokesman Joe Durkin said Dontavius was sitting up in his hospital bed Thursday.

Dontavius' mother, Shawn Dewberry, said he had been playing football with his brothers and cousins across the street. Through a window, she called Dontavius home for dinner, and headed to a room in the back of her house when she heard screaming outside.
