YABA tournament sets entries recordBy PHIL GULICK© St. Petersburg Times published November 1, 2002 Meyer & Meyer took over the Bantam division last week in the 36th annual Greater Pinellas YABA Youth/Adult Tournament at Sunrise Lanes. It was the final weekend of a two-weekend stand that saw a record 210 entries. Youngster Brandon Meyer teamed with John Genevie for a winning 1,298 pinfall. They paired up again for a 1,394 and second place, then Brandon and John Meyer knocked over 1,386 pins for third. Preps is for bowlers 8-and-under. Miles Neff and Steve Stoddard captured the title for players 9-11 with a 1,437, eight pins better than Joseph Fitzgerald and Tim Smith. Steve Stanton and Paul Hampshire combined for a 1,588 and the Junior crown for competitors 12-14. Joe Noodwang and Donald Ferrier fired a 1,518 for the Major/Senior championship, 12 pins ahead of Tony and Frank Mainenti. The high youth scorers included Travis Reichert, with six 600 series; Shaun Goucher, four, plus two 700 (756) series; Russell Brock, 289-710; and Tony Mainenti, 258-681. Among the high adult scorers were Keith Glasgow, 248-789; Gary Halstrom, 268-774; Bill Zuben, 258-736; and Mark Misura, 268-719. Each division winner received $250 in scholarship money. More than 50 trophies will be awarded for the tourney that was directed by Nikki Salerno. UPPER PINELLAS: David Sapp teamed with Michael Rooks for a 1,403 series and Division A victory in the Upper Pinellas Junior Bowling Association Youth/Adult event at Dunedin Lanes on Sunday. Kristi and Bob Montone won the Division B title with a 1,438. Michael VanSwearingen and Jean Zaralban captured the Division C crown with a 1,321 pinfall. Brittnee and Patrick Ward were the Division D winners with a 1,246. Eric and Debi Curley topped Division E at 1,209. Christopher Edgar, Allison Roy, Timothy Deasy, Sapp, Montone and Curley each won $75 in scholarship money. TITLE PURSUIT: The race for the Pinellas County High School League boys scratch title got hotter last week with a major shift in the top five places. Palm Harbor broke a tie with Largo and leads by a point. Lakewood jumped to third, Osceola to fourth and Dixie Hollins fell from third to fifth. Palm Harbor's Josh Guinand logged a 279 game, and the Hurricanes recorded a 2,199 series. Largo continues to lead the handicap standings. The Northeast Vikings, with a 193-17 match-point mark, continue to dominate the girls scratch division. East Lake is second and Palm Harbor third. East Lake rolled a 210-402 Baker game-series and a 1,789 scratch series. Palm Harbor heads the girls handicap class, and Dunedin's No. 2 team is the junior varsity front-runner. Three weeks remain before players prep for the Dec. 14 state event at Don Carter's University Lanes in Fort Lauderdale. RENEWED: The ABC is reviving its popular Sport Bowling Challenge with a new sponsor, Storm Bowling Products, during the 100th Championships Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. The tourney will be rolled on 12 specially-installed lanes adjacent to the 48 ABC Tournament lanes in Knoxville Convention Center. The Challenge will use a two-game sweeper format, but a doubles event has been added. The tourney was introduced during the 2000 ABC Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., where nearly $800,000 in prize money was distributed. The championships are scheduled for Feb. 8-June 22. AROUND THE LANES: The 49th annual St. Petersburg Women's Classic opens this weekend with the team event at Ten Pin Lanes and the doubles and singles at Sunshine Bowl. Entries are closed for the tournament that continues the next three weekends. ... Louis Kusner rolled a 300-768 at Countryside Lanes. ... Billy Ferrie recorded a 300-825, Brett Bartley an 813, Bob Little and James Wagner 300 games and Michelle Mumma and Dan Sellers a 299 each at Liberty Lanes. ... Keith Korneisel posted a 299-660 at Sunshine Bowl. ... Robert Cullum, Hershall Pinegar, James Hurd and Kenny Mullins won the Almost Midnight team tourney and $1,000 at Liberty. ...
