Police reports
By Times staff writer Sketch released of man wanted in deputy assaultPasco County sheriff's investigators released a sketch Friday of the man who dragged a deputy from his car two days earlier. Deputy April Wendel, 29, was working an off-duty detail about 2:30 p.m. at the construction site at U.S. 41 and Ehren Cutoff. A passer-by alerted her to a man asleep in his car just south of the intersection, sheriff's spokesman Kevin Doll said. When Wendel went to the car, she had to open the door to awaken the driver. The startled man awoke, hit her several times and started to drive away while holding her. He let go and she fell to the ground, barely avoiding being run over, Doll said. Wendel suffered minor injuries. The man who dragged her is described as white, 35 to 40 years old, about 5 feet 10 and about 150 pounds. He has a muscular build and a tan complexion. He has long brown hair and a scruffy beard or mustache. He possibly works in the masonry or drywall business. He was in a tan, four-door, late 90s Toyota Corolla-type vehicle. Investigators ask that anyone with information call sheriff's Detective Lisa Mazza at 1-800-854-2862, ext. 7473. Hotel room argument results in battery chargeZEPHYRHILLS -- A fight over a telephone call sent a North Carolina man to the hospital and another to jail Thursday night. According to Zephyrhills police, Raymond Lloyd Smith, 33, of Andrews, N.C., was on the phone in his room at the Best Western motel on Gall Boulevard shortly after 11 p.m. when an argument broke out between him and roommate Ronnie Howard Roger, 54, of Marble, N.C. As the dispute escalated, Roger produced a 3-inch knife, police said. Smith tried to get past him to go out the door and was cut on the back. He was treated in the emergency room at East Pasco Medical Center and released. Police said Roger smelled of alcohol. He was charged with aggravated battery and taken to the county jail in Land O'Lakes where he remained Friday in lieu of $10,000 bail.
