TAMPA -- Seventy-eight of the best high school football players in the nation will be in San Antonio, Texas, in January for the Army All-American Bowl. And, in a testimony to the level of competition in Hillsborough County, two local players will join them.
Jefferson's Andre Caldwell and Jesuit's Garrett Rivas have been selected to play for the East team in the Jan. 5 game, which will be televised live from the Alamodome on ESPN2.
Caldwell, who has played wide receiver, kick returner and quarterback this season, will play receiver in the All-Star game. He has carried the ball 39 times for 555 yards and four touchdowns this season.
"The level of competition around here is so high," Caldwell said. "This just shows that people from everywhere are starting to realize how good Hillsborough County is in football."
Rivas, who has committed to play at Michigan next season, is 5 of 8 on field-goal attempts this season with a long kick of 39 yards. Two of his misses have been from longer than 50 yards, including one 56-yard attempt, and another was blocked. He has made 14 of 15 extra points.
