3-year-old boy who shot self with dad's gun dies
By Times staff writer TAMPA -- A 3-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the neck last week with his father's handgun died early Sunday morning, hospital officials said. Quinn Burchfield had been in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital since Oct. 28, when police said he shot himself with his father's handgun. TGH officials said Burchfield died just before 2 a.m. Police said Quinn was watching television with his sisters Britney, 11, and Hannah, 8, when the accident happened at their home at 4426 W Bay Ave. about 7:30 p.m. His parents were in the kitchen at the time. Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said the boy found the gun on a dresser in the jeans of his father, Steven Burchfield. State records show that Burchfield, 33, has a valid concealed weapons permit. Burchfield could face criminal charges for allowing the child to gain access to the gun. Durkin said police are still investigating. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
