Ryder jury recesses for day

The jury in Winona Ryder's shoplifting trial deliberated for five hours Tuesday and retired without reaching a verdict.

The jury was scheduled to return today for its second day of talks. The panel sent no messages to the court during the day and asked no questions.

Ryder, 31, made a brief appearance at the courthouse at the start of the day but left after about an hour.

The jury received the case late Monday after closing arguments in which the prosecution suggested the actor shoplifted for the thrill of it and the defense portrayed her as the victim of overzealous security guards.

The actor is charged with grand theft, burglary and vandalism for allegedly stealing more than $5,500 worth of merchandise from the Beverly Hills Saks Fifth Avenue store on Dec. 12.

'Late Show' coming to radio

Starting next week, David Letterman fans won't have to rush to their televisions to hear the night's Top Ten list.

Fifteen of Infinity Broadcasting's radio stations -- including Tampa's WYUU-FM 92.5 -- will simulcast Letterman's CBS Late Show each weeknight at 11:35 p.m., beginning Monday. Infinity, like CBS, is owned by Viacom.

"We feel this is a great opportunity for David Letterman's millions of fans to listen to the show while they're driving in their cars or away from their homes," said John Sykes, chairman of Infinity Broadcasting.

TV notes

AN END TO 'SEX'?: There may not be much more Sex for HBO. Cast member Cynthia Nixon broke the hearts of 7-million viewers Monday when she said that the forthcoming episodes of the cable channel's comedy Sex and the City would be the last. The revelation came at the end of a morning interview with Fox News Channel.

Since production on the next season is not scheduled to begin until February, new episodes aren't likely to surface until next summer. HBO could delay, as it did for 16 months when The Sopranos was in reruns.

'HAUNTED' PULLED: UPN's Tuesday night schedule will be Haunted no more.

The network is pulling the low-rated rookie suspense drama from its lineup after Tuesday night's broadcast. It will be replaced next week by a WWE special; repeats of other UPN programs will likely fill the 9 p.m. Tuesday slot for the duration of November sweeps.

No official decision about the show's future has been announced.

Haunted starred Party of Five alum Matthew Fox as a private eye who gets some supernatural help solving crimes. It failed to draw many viewers in its post-Buffy the Vampire Slayer time slot, however.
