Still life wasn't her style

Salma Hayek fought long and hard, outlasting Jennifer Lopez and (shudder) Madonna, for the title role in Frida (R), a biography of legendary artist Frida Kahlo. Hayek sports a unibrow to resemble Kahlo, whose exotic look was just the exterior of a grandiose personality. She was a revolutionary in her paintings and other aspects of her life, boldly blending sex and politics in an affair with Leon Trotsky (Geoffrey Rush) and bisexuality before that term was commonly known. Alfred Molina co-stars as an equally mercurial artist, muralist Diego Rivera, her source of love and creative encouragement. Frida was directed by Julie Taymor, who displayed a flair for cinematic design in Titus (1999) after designing the Broadway look of The Lion King. Frida was screened too late for Weekend. See Friday's Floridian section for a review.
