PHILADELPHIA -- Jamie Langenbrunner scored with 7:43 left and the Devils snapped the Flyers' six-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory on Thursday night in the first meeting of the season between the Atlantic Division rivals.

After Eric Desjardins failed to control the puck near the right boards, Langenbrunner gathered it, skated just outside the right circle and fired a shot into the top left corner for his third goal.

Seconds earlier, Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur stopped Simon Gagne on a two-on-one breakaway.

Brodeur made 23 saves for his 56th career shutout, first this season and ninth by a 1-0 margin. The Devils have allowed just 17 goals, fewest in the NHL.

Desjardins nearly beat Brodeur with a slap shot early in the game. The puck got past Brodeur, but he reached back and stopped it as it was heading into the net.

HURRICANES 2, SABRES 0: Jeff O'Neill and Craig Adams scored for host Carolina, and Kevin Weekes recorded his first shutout as the Hurricanes extended Buffalo's winless streak to seven.

O'Neill's fifth goal of the season late in the first was his third winner in 14 games. Carolina has earned at least one point in seven of its last eight games to move into a first-place tie with Tampa Bay in the Southeast Division.

CAPITALS 2, PANTHERS 1 (OT): Jaromir Jagr scored a shorthanded goal at 3:56 of overtime and Olaf Kolzig made 32 saves in his first game back from injury to lead host Washington. With Kip Miller in the penalty box, Jagr chased down a clearing pass from Jeff Halpern and beat Jani Hurme on his backhand for his eighth goal of the season.

RANGERS 1, FLAMES 0 (OT): Brian Leetch scored 51 seconds into overtime to give Dan Blackburn his first league shutout and lift host New York. Blackburn, 19, stopped 26 shots to earn his 13th career victory in his 36th game.

CANADIENS 3, ISLANDERS 0: Jose Theodore made 42 saves for his first shutout of the season to lead host Montreal. Theodore, the league's MVP last season, got his 16th career shutout despite Montreal being outshot 42-21. Craig Rivet, Jan Bulis and Doug Gilmour scored for the Canadiens.

RED WINGS 2, BRUINS 1 (OT): Sergei Fedorov's goal 2:08 into overtime gave host Detroit a victory over Boston. Fedorov beat John Grahame low on the short side with a slap shot from the top inside edge of the left circle for his ninth goal of the season.

BLUE JACKETS 5, BLUES 2: Andrew Cassels scored twice and Ray Whitney added a goal and two assists as visiting Columbus snapped St. Louis' nine-game winning streak. Columbus scored two power-play goals in six chances.

BLACKHAWKS 5, THRASHERS 0: Jocelyn Thibault stopped 17 shots for his second straight shutout, and Tyler Arnason and Mark Bell each had a goal and two assists as host Chicago defeated Atlanta. Thibault's shutout was his third this season and 30th career.

COYOTES 4, WILD 1: Shane Doan scored twice during Phoenix's three-goal first and the Coyotes handed Minnesota its first road loss. Landon Wilson had a goal and an assist, and Claude Lemieux also scored as the Coyotes won for the third time in four games.

Hurricanes' Irbe wants to play somewhere else

Goaltender Arturs Irbe hardly has been visible in the first month of the season -- except in advertisements or sitting on the Hurricanes' bench as red-hot Kevin Weekes guards the net -- and he's just about fed up with it.

"If I am not playing I don't want to stay here," Irbe said. "I am not going to lie about it. I need to play. I can't sit 10 games and kill myself, deprive myself of sleep and think what I'm doing wrong and how it has gone this far."

AVALANCHE: Defenseman Bryan Muir was recalled from AHL Hershey.

BLUE JACKETS: Right wing Matt Davidson was recalled from AHL Syracuse. Davidson will replace center Espen Knutsen (groin strain), who is day to day.

CAPITALS: Goaltender Olie Kolzig was activated after missing five games with an injured hand. Kolzig said his hand might require surgery in the offseason, but he can play now with only minor discomfort. Doctors told him he is unlikely to aggravate the injury by playing.

COYOTES: Right wing Frank Banham signed a multiyear contract. Financial terms were not disclosed. He was assigned to AHL Springfield.

MAPLE LEAFS: Forward Josh Holden was recalled from AHL St. John's. He replaces center Nik Antropov, who will miss up to 10 days after going on the injured list with a sprained knee.

PANTHERS: Goalie Wade Flaherty was recalled from AHL San Antonio, and center/left wing Jeff Toms was reassigned.
