Sign up for Saturday's Great Carrollwood Turkey Run at the Carrollwood Recreation Center. The 5K run and 1-mile walk/run are open to the public. The event is geared toward weekend warriors who run and walk for exercise, although others are welcome, says Carrollwood recreation district manager Chuck Kim.

Age groups start at 9 and younger and climb to 70 and older. Awards will go to the top three in each group for the 5K run and to first place for the 1-mile walk/run. Participants, limited to 150, will receive a gift bag with a T-shirt. The T-shirt, picturing a turkey in tennis shoes, is already a hit.

"We're getting rave reviews; it's awesome," said Kim, who is ordering extra shirts for nonparticipants. Cost: $10.

The event is organized to encourage a sense of community. The entry fee is $10 for the 1-mile race and $15 for the 5K before Friday and $15 and $20, respectively, the day of the event. Registration forms are available outside the recreation center office at 3515 McFarland Road. Participants should report at 6:45 a.m. for the 5K and 7:30 a.m. for the 1-mile walk/run. Call 932-1257.
