Letters to the EditorsCommissioners didn't make case for fire district independence© St. Petersburg Times published November 11, 2002 Editor: Re: Confusion blurs independence vote, Nov. 7 Times: Spring Hill Fire Rescue District commissioners claim that the bid for "independence" was rejected by voters because they were uninformed. Well, whose job is it to inform the public? As a Precinct 19 voter, it was unclear what they were asking for. Being unaware of all of the facts led to a "No" vote simply because any agency that does not want to be governed raises a red flag. How could the community be better served once the overseers are out of the picture? Even after the election, in the Nov. 7 article, the commissioners were given the opportunity to make their argument, and they did not. I still don't know what their agenda is. I would suggest that before this issue goes on the 2004 ballot, the fire commission do a better job of informing the public. Before I give you what appears to be carte blanche status, I need to know all the facts.
Fire district's leaders should get their act together before blaming the votersEditor: If Spring Hill Fire Rescue District Commissioner Tommy Marasciullo thinks voters are "confused" because of their rejection of independence for the fire district, I have news for him. How dare he tell the voters they were ignorant of the issue when he has done nothing to give voters a reason to trust that board. He, who made the callous remarks about the woman involved in the sexual encounter with three firefighters. It is obvious why he made those remarks. Lt. John Ferriero and some other firefighters work for Commissioner Marasciullo in a painting business. Commissioner Marasciullo should not even be a member of the fire commission. It is a clear conflict of interest. Basically, Spring Hill has an excellent fire rescue department. Outside of this scandal, the problem is not with the firefighters. It is the continuous bickering and infighting that goes on with the fire commission itself. That commission needs to be weeded next election. Until that happens, and the fire commission gains some trust and credibility with the voters, voters should and will demand county oversight.
