Power plant returns to full power after Thursday shutdownBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published November 12, 2002 CRYSTAL RIVER -- Florida Power's nuclear plant returned to full power over the weekend after an equipment malfunction Thursday prompted a shutdown, spokesman Mac Harris said. The problem occurred while maintenance was being performed in the switchyard, which takes electricity produced by the plant and puts it into general circulation. A relay switch malfunctioned and caused an output breaker to open, Harris said. The plant itself was operating fine, he added, but the turbine automatically tripped to prevent damage. In an unrelated matter, the plant will drop to about 85 percent power today so maintenance can be performed on equipment that turns steam back into water. Harris said the work will last about four days. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
